Weight loss procedures: Gastric Sleeve vs Gastric Bypass
Gastric sleeve surgery
A sleeve gastrectomy, a type of weight loss surgery, permanently removes about 85% of the patient’s stomach. At Waikiki Private Hospital, we understand that everyone has different needs and goals and therefore we offer the best surgical weight loss option for you.
Method
Reduction of stomach size to about 15% of its original volume.
Expected weight loss
Approximately 60-70% of excess weight within 12 to 18 months post-surgery.
Gastric sleeve benefits
- Reduced stomach size: Helps you feel full after eating small amounts, reducing overall calorie intake.
- Hormonal changes: Decreased hunger hormone levels can lead to a reduced appetite.
- Expected weight loss: Approximately 60-70% of excess weight within 12 to 18 months post-surgery.*
Gastric sleeve risks
Gastric sleeve surgery, like any surgery, has potential risks. These can include infections, blood clots, and leaks where the stomach is stapled. You might also react badly to anaesthesia. Long-term risks include nutritional deficiencies, especially if you don’t follow the dietary guidelines.
At Waikiki Private, we provide gastric sleeve surgery as an effective weight loss option.
Gastric bypass surgery
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and mini gastric bypass are both weight loss surgeries where a small stomach pouch is created and connected to the small intestine. These types of surgeries are usually done at larger hospitals. If this is the right option for you, our bariatric surgeons can refer you to a facility where they perform the procedure, making sure you’re well supported every step of the way.
Method
Expected weight loss
Gastric bypass benefits
- Smaller stomach pouch: Limits food intake.
- Altered digestive tract: Reduces calorie and nutrient absorption.
- Hormonal changes: Decreased appetite due to hormonal changes.
- Expected weight loss: Around 65-80% of excess weight within 12 to 18 months post-surgery.*
Gastric bypass risks
Gastric bypass surgery comes with risks like infections, blood clots, and leaks in the digestive system. You might also react badly to anaesthesia. Because a gastric bypass changes the digestive tract, it can cause nutrient absorption problems, leading to deficiencies. Patients might experience dumping syndrome, where food moves too quickly through the system, causing nausea and diarrhoea.
At Waikiki Private, we don’t offer gastric bypass surgery. However, if this type of weight loss surgery is a better fit for you, your specialist will let you know and guide you to the most suitable hospital for the procedure.
Deciding between gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery
The best weight loss procedure for you depends on various factors including your health status, weight loss goals, and lifestyle. Our bariatric surgeons at Waikiki Private Hospital will help you decide based on your medical history.
- Gastric sleeve: Less complex, no rerouting of the digestive tract.
- Gastric bypass: Both restrictive and malabsorptive, may be more effective for some individuals.

Are you a candidate for weight loss surgery?
Weight loss surgery is a big commitment and not a quick fix. Whether you have a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass, you will need to make lifestyle changes. You might be a candidate for weight loss surgery if:
- Your BMI is over 35, or over 30 with an obesity-related condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea (IFSO AMBS guidelines)
- You’ve tried other weight loss methods without success.
- You are aged between 18 and 65.
- You have health problems related to obesity.
- You have no psychiatric or substance abuse issues.
- You are prepared to understand and commit to the risks and lifestyle changes involved in the surgery.
At Waikiki Private Hospital, our experienced weight loss surgeons will guide you through the process and help you get ready for the journey ahead.
Bariatric surgery cost
The cost of weight loss surgery
At Waikiki Private Hospital, we know that starting a weight loss journey needs careful planning and support. You can choose to be admitted as a privately insured patient or to be self-funded.
Privately insured bariatric care
Weight loss surgery is usually covered under Gold-level hospital insurance in Australia. However, you should check with your insurance provider, as coverage can vary. Typically, you will need to wait about 12 months before you can claim weight loss surgery through your Gold-level private health insurance.
