Preparing for hospital admission

At Waikiki Private Hospital, we want to make your admission easy and stress-free.

Here, you’ll find important information for patients and visitors, including pre-admission steps, what to bring, dietary needs, and more.

Online pre-admission

Waikiki Private Hospital offers an online pre-admission form for your convenience.

Admission to hospital: how to prepare?

Before admission, we’ll confirm your arrival time and any payments needed. If you get sick before your admission, contact your doctor.

After your specialist appointment and confirmation of your procedure we ask that you follow these steps to ensure we can offer you the best care on your admission.

  1. Please complete your hospital admission paperwork one week prior to your procedure by following this link
If you require a paper version of this form, please access it here as well as the patient privacy notice. Please ensure to return these to us no later than one week prior to your admission either in person or via email.
  2. You will receive a text message from our hospital the day before admission with your exact arrival time. This message will also let you know the excess amount to be paid on our arrival.
  3. On arrival you will be received by one of our friendly team members for your administrative admission. This will include:
    a. A thorough patient detail check
    b. An allergy check
    c. Confirm and sign a Covid Declaration
    d. Pay any outstanding balance or excess
  4. One of our nursing team will come and collect you to proceed with your medical admission on the ward. This includes but is not limited to:
    a. A patient detail check
    b. ECG’s, clinical observations, weight, and height measurements
    c. Administering pre-meds if required
  5. Our nursing team will ensure you are comfortable whilst waiting for your procedure.
  • Shower or bathe prior to arrival
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing, cotton underwear, and socks
  • Remove any nail polish, make-up, and jewellery
  • Do not bring any valuables. The hospital does not accept liability for lost or damaged property.

Your anaesthetist may give you specific fasting instructions. Otherwise, do not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours prior to your procedure if you are having a general anaesthetic or intravenous sedation. Do not eat sweets, chew gum, or take sips of water.

  • Health fund membership details
  • Medicare and pension card
  • All current medication
  • Letters or referrals from your doctors
  • Relevant x-rays
  • Glasses/contact lenses if appropriate
  • Hearing aids if required
  • Dressing gown (including endoscopy patients)
  • Sleeping attire and personal toiletries (for overnight stay)
  • Reading material

Please inform your nurse on admission of any special dietary needs. Our catering staff are proficient in planning and preparing nutritious and tasty meals, complying with strict food guidelines reviewed by a dietitian. Vegetarian and heart-healthy options are available.

Where clinically required, if someone needs to stay with you overnight or if you are staying overnight when your child is admitted, you can request this during the admission process. A boarder fee applies for each night and may be covered by your health fund. Boarder meals are also available at a minimal cost.

For day-only procedures under general anaesthetic or intravenous sedation, you usually go home a couple of hours after the procedure, depending on your recovery. A responsible adult must stay with you for the first 24 hours.

For procedures under local anaesthetic, you usually go home immediately, but you might need to rest for 30 minutes.

If you need to stay overnight, this will be discussed with your doctor. Discharge for overnight stays are 10 am.

Our staff will help you with your estimated discharge time so you can arrange travel. Your discharge nurse will give you detailed instructions. If needed, you can wait in the patient lounge for your ride.

We may call you within 72 hours to check on your recovery and answer any questions that you may have following your procedure.

For the first 24 hours after general anaesthetic or intravenous sedation, it is advisable that you:

  • Do not drive a car until the next day
  • Do not consume alcohol
  • Do not operate machinery
  • Do not make important decisions or sign legal documents
  • Do not travel unaccompanied
  • Do not engage in sports, heavy work, or lifting
  • Do not take sedatives unless prescribed

If you are worried about a change in your condition following discharge, contact:

  • Your surgeon or general practitioner during business hours
  • Waikiki Private Hospital after hours on our phone number
  • Your local emergency department in an emergency

Get all the details you need about covering hospital costs at Waikiki Private Hospital. Whether you have private insurance, are self-funded, or have special coverage needs, here is the information to help you manage your expenses.

Privately insured patients

Waikiki Private Hospital works with most private health funds. Please contact your health fund before your admission to check details about your procedure, any costs you need to pay, waiting periods, or services that are not covered.

After you submit your online pre-admission application, the hospital will check your health fund coverage. We will contact you before your admission to let you know about any costs you need to pay.

When you are admitted, we will ask you to allow us to arrange payment directly from your health fund for our services.

Uninsured (self-funded) patients

If you don’t have private health insurance, are having cosmetic surgery, or have overseas health insurance, you will get a quote for hospital fees before your admission. You can get a quote by calling the hospital on (08) 9550 0222, and it is valid for 30 days.

The quote covers only hospital fees; check with your doctor and anaesthetist for their charges. Hospital fees must be paid at or before admission. We accept payment by EFTPOS (except American Express and Diners Club), bank cheque, money order, or cash.

Other expenses

When you are admitted, you will need to sign a financial consent form. This form explains any extra charges you might have, such as for a private room, anti-embolic stockings, dressings, and personal expenses.

You may also get separate bills from these service providers:

  • Surgeon
  • Anaesthetist
  • Pathology (blood tests or biopsies)
  • Medical imaging
  • Allied health professionals

For questions about these bills, please contact the provider directly.

Medicare benefits do not cover private hospital charges, but you might be able to claim for charges from other service providers. For more information, contact the relevant provider.

If your admission is due to WorkCover, Third Party, or Public Liability claims, you need written approval from the insurance company beforehand. We cannot confirm your admission until we get this approval. If the claim is not approved, it will be treated as an uninsured admission, and you will need to pay the estimated hospital costs.

For DVA Gold Card holders, we will send a claim for your hospital bill directly to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. You will need to pay for any services not covered by DVA when you leave.

For DVA White Card holders, you need prior approval for your hospital stay from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. You will need to pay for any services not covered by DVA when you leave.
